Take a systematic look at irrigation through the lens of a major system renovation that included considerations for a natural play area and a sensitive watershed!  The Heads Up! Irrigation Field Day provides a unique combination of irrigation presentations and product demonstrations.

Presenters will explore the design, construction, safety, and maintenance of a large and sophisticated irrigation system at Westmoreland Park in Southeast Portland.  Park staff, designers, manufacturers, and suppliers will tour participants in small groups through the restored Westmoreland Park, with expert presentations at various irrigation "stations."  In addition, ORPA commercial partners will be on hand to discuss and demonstrate the latest and greatest in irrigation, landscape, and general "green industry" products.

Specifically, the workshop will address the following topics:

  • Irrigation design considerations when renovating a park with an extensive and aged system.
  • How safely to continue operating an irrigation system while overlaying a new one.
  • The benefits of conducting Irrigation system assessments.
  • Lessons learned from the construction process with Low Bid installers.
  • Dealing with irrigation installations in inclement weather conditions.
  • Lessons learned from the first 10 months of operation.
  • Inside working knowledge of maximizing central control oversight with pump efficiency.

There will be hands-on and small group tours at various session stations.

Who Should Attend?

This workshop is geared to park professionals who are involved with the planning, design, construction, and/or maintenance of irrigation systems in large public areas. The workshop also will be of interest to those who are interested in learning more about keeping parks alive during times of drought.
