The SPRINT Summer Leader Training Workshop provides training and networking for both entry level and leadership camp staff.  Sessions are designed to build upon agency training to increase awareness, safe decision-making abilities and creatively in a camp setting.  The SSL workshop works in conjunction with established training to provide a well-rounded networking experience for front line and leadership summer camp employees and volunteers.  Agencies will benefit from sending new staff who need additional training, returning staff who would like to build upon established skills, or volunteers looking to get their foot in the door.

What You Will Learn

Sessions are scheduled in a two-track system; track one for entry level staff who have just been hired or who have limited front line staff experience, and track two for leadership staff who are looking to build their expertise in a summer camp setting.

Speakers

Stu Spence (Keynote), Parks & Recreation Director - La Grande Parks & Recreation

Your exceedingly dynamic Keynote Speaker is a life-long parks and recker.  He grew up in Central Washington loving outdoors and adventure.  He’s an only child which explains a lot and enjoys spending time with his wife and 11-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter.  He graduated from Central Washington University with a bachelor’s degree in Parks & Recreation Management.  After college, he worked for the Boys & Girls Club, worked for a couple of cities and ran a teen center, managed day camps, events, youth and adult sports, and more.  He is currently the Parks & Recreation Director for the City of La Grande where he oversees the pool, parks, recreation, and urban forestry programs.  He’s earned some fancy awards like the Oregon Recreation & Parks Association New Professional of the Year, Professional of the Year at the Boys & Girls Clubs, and the Union County Public Employee of the Year.  Mostly, he is a cheerleader for parks and recreation and making his community a better place through our parks and programs.

Greg Winterrowd and Colin LeLand (Lunch Tutorial), Founders of Yo-Yo University

Greg and Colin, the founders of Yo-Yo University, have taught over 5000 people how to yo-yo.  After a brief demonstration of skills, form, and hilarious jokes... relatively funny jokes - you will join these yo-yo masters for a tutorial on how to throw.  You'll learn what it takes to build a foundation of skills from nothing, and a few tricks to impress your friends.  *Yo-Yo and fun provided.
